The Pian delle Betulle, at 1,500 metres, is nicknamed the ‘last paradise’: cars aren't allowed up here. It's famous for its wood of more than two hundred birch trees, its pastures in summer and its snow in winter.

On the way up, stop for a meal at Pratobuscante.

How to get there

By cable car from Margno: a five-minute ride, about €13.50 return for adults.

By car to the Alpe di Paglio, then a 15-20 minute walk along an easy mule track.
